Elbow replacement surgery involves removing damaged regions of the elbow joint and replacing them with metal and plastic pieces (implants). This procedure is also known as elbow arthroplasty. In the elbow, three bones come together. The upper arm bone (humerus) links to the larger of the two forearm bones (ulna) through a loose hinge. Rotation is provided by the two forearm bones (radius and ulna). Historically, elbow replacement surgery has had a greater rate of problems than hip or knee replacement surgery. Recent developments in surgical technique and implant design, however, have increased the success rate of elbow replacements. Conditions ranging from arthritis to fractures and other injuries can all cause elbow injury. In many cases, arthritis and fracture damage can be surgically rectified. However, if the damage is serious, replacement is usually preferable. The most prevalent reasons for having elbow replacement surgery are pain and lack of motion.
